Life detoxing from time to time is important. And by that I simply mean, removing yourself from your hectic daily routine to take some time out. It’s so easy to get caught up with work and a consistently busy schedule, particularly when you live in a bustling city, with things to distract you 24/7. So every now and then it’s important to make a conscious effort to remove yourself from the hustle and bustle, to focus your energies on family, hobbies, or simply switching your phone off. This can be for a few hours, or a few days; the idea is that you make the effort to take a break.

This is a good one for the workaholics out there, or business owners, who never really switch off from work. But every so often you will need to walk away from your computer screen and put away your never-ending To Do list, to focus on just being, rather than always doing. Or at least doing something different. Here are 5 reasons why it’s so important to take a break:

1. Your mind needs to recharge. Just as your body needs rest physically, it also needs to take a break mentally. Your brain needs to rest and recharge after focusing on a task, or a particular type of work for a sustained period of time. The less breaks you take, the less productive you actually become because your concentration levels will decrease – so instead of procrastinating mindlessly, you may as well use that time recharging instead!

2. Stress relief. Taking a break from your screen, walking away from your desk and pursuing a hobby or a passion for a few hours (at the very least) can be a great stress reliever because it removes you from the (stressful) situation. It also gives your mind room to breathe and to explore other experiences, so you will often come back to your work more refreshed with a clear mind to problem solve.

3. Your brain needs to process. So all that jumping from one thing to the next – multi-tasking, checking your emails, your social media updates – well it can get hectic, and the brain needs time to process all the information you are bombarding it with in a short space of time. By taking a break, you allow your brain to review that information and process it – moving it into long-term memory storage, which is more useful in the long run.

4. It’s good for your body. People who work extremely long hours tend to burn out – eventually. It’s simply not sustainable if you fail to take regular breaks. You often eat unhealthily because there’s no time to cook a healthy meal, so fast food is the easiest option when you’ve got a deadline and you can think of nothing but your stomach. Exercise is another one that falls by the way side, and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to all sorts of health issues, so avoid them by giving work a rest from time to time.

5. You lack creativity. We’ve all experienced writer’s block, or a creative blackout at some point, and it happens because your brain is tired and is looking for a change of scenery. Once you relax a little, you will often find that the creativity begins to flow again – namely those ‘lightbulb’ moments when you’re in the shower, or dozing off to sleep – the mind has a chance to wander, and that can be a great thing for productivity.
